Welcome to getty.net!
Introduction
getty.net is Marc Getty's attempt
to create the ultimate vanity domain. Many of the web pages that have come together to form modern day
getty.net have been on the web, on one server or another, since early
1994. To see a detailed history of getty.net and it's predecessor pages,
see the history section below.
If I had to pick the most often asked question I get regarding getty.net,
it would have to be: "how much time do you spend working on getty.net".
Lately I spend on average one to two hours
per week working on the various pages on getty.net. However, I did neglect
this site completely for all of 1998 and the beginning of 1999.
History
- Marc Getty's first web pages were hosted on
astro.ocis.temple.edu, which was at the time an
ancient CDC unix system. It ran EP/IX, a proprietary version
of unix by CDC, on two 66 MHz MIPS processors and 256 MB
of RAM. I created the my first web pages using Notepad on WindowsNT v. 3.1 at home and copy-pasted
these files through a terminal emulator to astro.
I still have an account on
astro and it
refers you to my getty.net site.
(Spring 1994 - Fall 1994)
- In the fall of 1994 I took my first Computer Science class,
Pascal C061, at Temple University and was given an account on
thunder.ocis.temple.edu. thunder
was, and still is, a Digital Equipment Corporation Alpha Server with (4) 200 MHz processors
and 512 MB or RAM. It initially ran OSF/1 but now runs Digital Unix.
At the time this was an amazingly fast server so I moved my web pages to
thunder from astro.
Just like on astro, I still have an
account on thunder and
it refers you to my
getty.net site.
(Fall 1994 - Summer 1995)
- When my favorite Bulletin Board Service (BBS), The Blackboard, decided to
start an Internet Service Provider (ISP) I signed up immediately. In fact, the first couple of weeks were
completely free for me because everyone who frequented the BBS were given login credentials for free before the
ISP went into production! I then moved my web pages to Blackboard Networks
which at the time had the domain name of bbn.net. The monster first tier ISP
BBN, now part of GTE, took the domain name
bbn.net from Blackboard Networks which forced
them to move to the domain name blackboard.com. This meant the URL of my
web page changed from http://bbn.net/getty/ to
http://blackboard.com/getty/. On a side note,
Blackboard Networks no longer uses the domain name
blackboard.com, it too was taken from them, this time by
Blackboard Inc the company that writes software for online
classes.
(Summer 1995 - Summer 1997)
- In late August 1997 Jack Haney, the owner of
Blackboard Networks, sent out an e-mail advertising a
domain hosting special. It was $99.99 a year for a web site and e-mail hosting. This was an offer
that I could not refuse. So I e-mailed him back that I wanted him to register, and host
getty.net for me.
The getty.net domain was registered for me on Thursday September 4, 1997, and
I moved my pages from blackboard.com to
getty.net early in the morning on Friday September 5, 1997.
(September 5, 1997 - October 11, 2000)
- On the morning of Saturday October 7, 2000 my getty.net mail stopped
working. This outage continued until the afternoon of Wednesday October 11, 2000. This was the
longest and the latest of my many e-mail outages, and enough to make me switch ISPs. During this
e-mail outage I made arrangements with Network Solutions
to move getty.net from Blackboard
Networks to PlantageNet Internet, LTD of
Doylestown, PA. I have been with pil.net
ever since, and it is nice to have getty.net on a
FreeBSD box.
(October 11, 2000 - Present)
- getty.net started with 7 pages:
marc getty, jack getty,
terminator, lrv,
churchville, texts,
and brad. It has since grown to more then 25 sections, many with
multiple pages, and all have had numerous improvements over the years. Stay tuned and watch
getty.net to continue to grow!
Other Vanity Domains
Here are some sites that I think are excellent examples of other vanity domains:
|
|
grrl.com is Bonnie Burton's
huge vanity domain / web zine. Lots to look at here! Perhaps, possibly, maybe, one day I can join the
Cute Geek Guy Gallery??
|
|
hillary.net is the first vanity domain I ever knew of.
This is a good example of how a lot of content can be quickly matched to navigation, and have
it look good, using the Just a Bunch Of Links method.
|
| |
| |
| |
|
|
beverlychua.com is a massive website by
Beverly Chua, a college
girl from Singapore. Excellent design, great content, and massive number of pages.
|
|
James Smallacombe definitely has the shortest domain name out there!
3.am may not be the most extensive site out there, but it sure has a
catchy URL! Be sure to bug him to add some content!

| |
|
|
Eric Steven Raymond is definitely one the the most well
known open source evanglists arround. It's also great to know that he is also from
Philadelphia, just like me.
ESR does not have a vanity domain, but I'll make an another
exception!
|
|
Geek god, creator of Mathematica, and theoretical physicist Stephen Wolfram
also has his own domain. I don't think he did this domain himself, it is a vanity domain nonetheless
and is full of extremely interesting content.

Discontinued Pages
The following are pages that I created for a special one time purpose and never deleted them
because I just don't think I should. Mabye someone will have a use for them, so I am just going
to leave them up until further notice.

The Future
As I mentioned above, I continuously change getty.net so
rest assured that there will always be new stuff to see here. In the near future, I plan to:
Stop back often and take a look at what getty.net has to offer, and please
leave feedback!
